Product & Certification

Does my water heater need an anode rod?

All residential water heaters come with a sacrificial anode rod from the factory. It depletes over time. If your tank is 3+ years old and the anode has never been replaced, the answer is almost certainly yes. The aurauto TGR2-X1 is a permanent, powered replacement that never depletes.

How often should I replace my anode rod?

Traditional magnesium or aluminum anode rods need replacement every 3-5 years. The aurauto TGR2-X1 powered titanium anode is permanent — no replacement required. Once installed, it protects the tank for the full life of the water heater.

How long does a powered titanium anode rod last?

Unlike a sacrificial magnesium or aluminum anode that depletes every 3 to 5 years, the TGR2-X1 powered titanium anode is permanent. It uses a small current to protect the tank instead of corroding itself. Once installed, it protects your water heater for the full life of the tank. The TGR2-X1 carries a 20-year limited warranty.

Is the TGR2-X1 NSF certified?

Yes. The TGR2-X1 is tested and certified against NSF/ANSI/CAN 372 by the Water Quality Association. This standard confirms the product is lead-free and safe for potable water systems. The certification mark is engraved on every nameplate and printed on the packaging.

How much electricity does the TGR2-X1 use?

Approximately $2 to $3 per year in electricity, depending on local rates. The TGR2-X1 draws 110V AC input and outputs 12V DC at 0.015 A. Compared to the energy savings from reduced sediment buildup (which improves tank efficiency), net annual savings are typically $30 to $50 per year.

What's in the box?

1x aurauto TGR2-X1 Powered Titanium Anode Rod; 1x 12-foot UL-listed power supply with 110V plug; 2x installation sockets (1-1/16 and 1-3/16 inch); 1x Teflon tape; 1x nameplate service sticker; 1x Quick-Start Installation Guide.

Where is aurauto manufactured?

The TGR2-X1 is made in China by Ningbo Shanhai Yunchuang Intelligent Technology Co., Ltd. We disclose country of origin transparently on every package, nameplate, product page, and user manual. We do not rebrand or relabel. Made in China is a sourcing choice, not a quality compromise — every TGR2-X1 ships with NSF/ANSI/CAN 372 certification traceable through WQA's online product listing.

Installation & Tools

Is the installation difficult?

The install takes about 5 minutes with a 1-1/16" socket wrench. A QR code in every package links to a step-by-step video tutorial. No plumbing modifications, no electrical permit required (it plugs into a standard 110V outlet).

Do I need a plumber to install this?

No plumber is required for most residential water heaters. The TGR2-X1 installs in about 5 minutes using the included sockets (1-1/16" for the old rod, 1-3/16" for the aurauto rod). A QR code on the package links to a step-by-step video tutorial. The unit plugs into any standard 110V outlet and uses less than $3 of electricity per year.

Do I really need a 1-1/16 inch socket wrench?

Yes. The TGR2-X1 hex head is sized for a 1-1/16 inch (about 27 mm) socket. Any other socket will round the head off and make future service difficult.

What if my old anode rod is stuck?

Older tanks can corrode the threads so that the factory rod becomes stuck. Apply a penetrating oil like PB Blaster, wait 15 minutes, then try again with a longer breaker bar. If it still will not move, contact a licensed plumber.

Do I need to drain the whole tank?

No. Draining 2 to 3 gallons is enough to drop the water level below the anode port. Full draining is unnecessary and adds a 30 to 60 minute recovery time once you refill.

Which direction should Teflon tape be wrapped?

Clockwise when looking at the end of the threads. Wrapping counter-clockwise causes the tape to unravel as you tighten the rod.

How will I know the TGR2-X1 is working after install?

The 12V power adapter has a small green LED that lights up when the unit is receiving power. If you have a multimeter, you can also verify approximately 12V DC at the rod top terminal.

Do I need a permit or electrician for this install?

No permit is required in any US jurisdiction. The TGR2-X1 plugs into a standard 110V outlet and draws well under 1 watt, well below the threshold for a hardwired electrical permit in any state.

Can I install the TGR2-X1 in the hot water outlet instead of the dedicated port?

The TGR2-X1 is specifically engineered for the dedicated anode port. Installing it in the hot water outlet without proper fittings may compromise performance and is not covered under warranty. For Bradford White and similar tanks where the anode is in the hot water outlet, the TGR2-X1 should not be installed. We recommend professional consultation for that installation type.

Compatibility

Does the TGR2-X1 fit Bradford White water heaters?

No. Most Bradford White water heaters place the anode rod in the hot water outlet rather than a dedicated anode port. The TGR2-X1 is engineered for dedicated anode ports only and does not fit that configuration. Please verify your water heater brand and anode port location before purchasing. See our Bradford White compatibility guide for details.

Does the TGR2-X1 eliminate rotten egg smell?

Yes, the TGR2-X1 typically eliminates sulfur or rotten egg smell within 24 hours of installation. The smell comes from sulfur-reducing bacteria that react with the magnesium in conventional anodes. The TGR2-X1 uses titanium and a small protective current, which neither feeds the bacteria nor corrodes — eliminating the chemical reaction that creates the smell.
