Bradford White Anode Rod: Where It Lives & Which aurauto® Model Fits

Updated 2026-09-02 · 8 min read · aurauto engineering

Quick answer

Most Bradford White residential tanks mount the anode rod inside the hot water outlet, not a separate dedicated port. You do not need a different rod or a drilled port. Choose the Bradford White Installation Kit on the TGR2-X1 page — same WQA-certified TGR2-X1, plus three pre-assembled tee fittings. Follow the Bradford White path in the installation guide. The Standard Kit is for dedicated-port tanks only.

Where the anode rod lives on a Bradford White

A residential water heater has three top openings: cold inlet, hot outlet, and the T&P relief valve. Some heaters also include a fourth fitting — the dedicated anode port. Most Bradford White models manufactured over the past two decades use a single-port design where the anode rod sits inside the hot water outlet, integrated into the outlet nipple.

Why a standard rod does not drop in

Standard magnesium, aluminum, and powered titanium rods assume a dedicated anode port on top of the tank. Most Bradford White residential models do not have that port — the factory anode sits inside the hot water outlet. The TGR2-X1 still fits: use the Bradford White Installation Kit. The three pre-assembled tee fittings adapt the hot outlet so the same rod installs there. The installation guide has a dedicated Bradford White path for that kit.

Watch for unauthorized brands Some sellers advertise third-party Bradford White rods that simply do not fit or that require permanent modification. Cross-check any product claim against the installer's own manual and the original packaging dimensions before buying.

Which kit matches your tank

1. Dedicated anode port — Standard Kit

Four fittings on top? Cold inlet, hot outlet, T&P valve, and a separate hex-nut anode port. Choose the Standard Kit. View TGR2-X1 →

2. Hot water outlet — Bradford White Kit

Only three fittings? Cold inlet, hot outlet, and T&P — no separate anode port. This is the usual Bradford White layout. Choose the Bradford White Installation Kit and install with the included tee fittings. Shop Bradford White Kit → · Install guide →

What to do if you own a Bradford White

For a typical Bradford White residential tank (40–89 gal), the Bradford White Kit is the install path. The other two options are only if you want a sacrificial swap, or you have a tank larger than 89 gal.

Option A — aurauto TGR2-X1 Bradford White Kit

Same TGR2-X1 rod, plus three pre-assembled tee fittings for the hot water outlet. Follow the Bradford White path in the installation guide. WQA NSF/ANSI/CAN 372 certified model TGR2-X1.

Option B — Replace factory magnesium only

Unscrew the hot water outlet, remove the factory magnesium rod, and install a compatible sacrificial rod. Lower upfront cost, but you keep the 3–5 year depletion cycle.

See tank corrosion guide

Option C — Larger tank (90–120 gal)

Bradford White offers 100 gal gas and 120 gal electric models, but not a standard 90 gal residential SKU. For tanks above 89 gal, join the TGR2-X2 waitlist for the 19" rod (Q4 2026).

Why we do not name specific third-party brands here

This page exists to help you make the right decision, not to score points. Any third-party brand names that pop up when you search this topic are independent suppliers; aurauto does not name them in our content. We focus on the specifications and the configuration that matters, so you end up with the right fit for your home rather than a competitor comparison.

Frequently asked questions

How do I tell if my Bradford White water heater has a dedicated anode port?

Look at the top of the tank. A dedicated anode port is a separate hexagonal fitting that is labeled or distinct from the cold inlet, hot outlet, and T&P valve. If you only see a cold inlet on the left and a hot outlet on the right, your heater does not have a dedicated anode port, which is common across most Bradford White residential models manufactured since 2000.

Why is the anode rod inside the hot water outlet on a Bradford White?

Bradford White residential tanks are built around a single top-port design. To save internal space the anode rod is integrated into the hot water outlet nipple at the factory. This means the anode is reached by unscrewing the outlet, not a separate port.

Can I install a powered titanium anode rod in a Bradford White heater?

Yes — select the Bradford White Installation Kit on the TGR2-X1 page. Most Bradford White tanks need the included tee fittings at the hot water outlet, not a dedicated top port. Do not use the Standard Kit on Bradford White tanks without a dedicated port. Follow the Bradford White path in the installation guide.

Does the aurauto TGR2-X1 work with a Bradford White water heater?

Yes, with the Bradford White Installation Kit. On the TGR2-X1 product page, select the Bradford White Kit. It includes tee fittings for hot-water-outlet installation. The Standard Kit is for dedicated anode ports only. WQA certification applies to model TGR2-X1.

Can I add a dedicated anode port to a Bradford White?

Technically yes, with a hot tank tap and a professional installer, but it is rarely worthwhile. The retrofit requires drilling and re-welding the top of the tank, which voids most manufacturer warranties. You do not need a dedicated port — use the Bradford White Installation Kit and its tee fittings at the hot water outlet.

Will replacing the anode rod void my Bradford White warranty?

Replacing the factory magnesium anode with a third-party rod in the hot water outlet typically does not void the heater warranty, provided the new rod meets the original port size and does not damage the outlet fitting. Confirm with the installer or installer documentation if unsure.

How long does the factory Bradford White anode rod last?

The factory magnesium anode in a Bradford White is typically designed to last 4 to 6 years in soft water, but as little as 12 to 24 months in hard water. Inspect the rod at the 2-year mark if you live in a hard water region.

When will aurauto ship a larger-tank model?

TGR2-X2 is a separate 19" rod for 90–120 gallon tanks (all brands), targeted Q4 2026. It is not the Bradford White install path — use the TGR2-X1 Bradford White Kit for standard BW residential tanks. Join the waitlist →
