How Water Heater Tank Corrosion Happens (and How to Stop It)

If you have ever opened a water heater after 15 years and seen pinholes through the tank wall, you have seen what happens when the anode rod stops doing its job. The fix is well understood: keep the tank cathodic. Here is how it works and what to check on your own tank.

Every residential water heater is lined with glass and bolted to a steel tank. The sacrificial anode rod is what protects that steel from rusting. Why your tank rusts from the inside out

The glass lining inside a modern residential water heater is fused to a steel tank. The glass lining protects the steel wherever the water touches it, but cracks appear at fittings and at the weld seams. Once water contacts steel, corrosion begins.

A galvanic reaction between the steel tank and the sacrificial anode rod forces the corrosion onto the anode instead of the tank. The anode corrodes preferentially — that is why it is called sacrificial. As long as the anode is intact, the tank is protected. When the anode is gone, the tank is the next metal to corrode.

How long does a typical anode last?

A magnesium or aluminum anode in a standard residential 40–89 gallon tank depletes in 3 to 5 years in soft water and as little as 12 to 24 months in hard water, in homes with high hot-water usage, or with electric heaters (which accelerate sacrificial consumption). After 5 years without replacement, your tank is unprotected.

Warning signs the anode is depleted

  • Rusty hot water at the tap (the anode depletes first around the outlet).
  • Hot water smells metallic or stale in addition to sulfur.
  • Tank age over 6 years with no service history.
  • Water utility has declared hard water in your area.
  • Heater runs almost constantly, suggesting sediment + corrosion is interfering with heat transfer.

The powered titanium alternative

Frequently asked questions

Is a powered titanium anode actually better than magnesium?

It does the same galvanic job without consuming metal. Magnesium works until it is gone, then needs replacement every 3 to 5 years. Titanium does not deplete.

Will my water heater warranty be affected?

Installing a third-party anode rod typically does not void the heater warranty as long as the rod fits the factory port and is installed to code. Confirm with the installer or installer documentation if you want to be certain.

My tank is 8 years old. Is it too late?

Not necessarily. If the anode is still active and there is no visible rust at the hot outlet or on the floor, a powered rod can extend the tank life by another 5 to 10 years.

How do I know if my anode is depleted?

Inspect the rod. Pull it out, measure the diameter, and look for heavy pitting. A magnesium rod less than 1/2 inch thick should be replaced.
